When you start looking into newborn photography in Louisville, one of the first decisions you will run into is this: do you want a studio session or a lifestyle session? If you are not sure what the difference is or which one is right for your family, you are in good company. This is one of the questions I get most often from expecting parents, and it is worth taking a few minutes to think through before you book.
The short answer is that both are beautiful, and both tell a completely different kind of story. Here is how to figure out which one fits yours.

What Is a Studio Newborn Session?
A studio newborn session takes place here at my Louisville studio. Your baby is the star of the show, and the focus is on capturing those impossibly tiny details: curled fingers, soft skin, the way a brand new baby sleeps without a care in the world.
Studio sessions tend to be more structured and intentional. Your baby will be gently wrapped and settled into a controlled environment where I manage the lighting, temperature, and every detail of the setup from start to finish. The result is a gallery that feels polished, timeless, and cohesive, the kind of images that look beautiful printed large and hung on a wall.
The studio also gives us flexibility that an in-home session simply cannot. I can move through different wraps, setups, and arrangements throughout the session, giving you variety within a single gallery. If you want a few looks, a few moods, and a range of images to choose from, studio is the natural fit.
Parents and siblings are absolutely welcome, and honestly some of the most treasured images from studio sessions are not of the baby alone. They are the ones of dad looking down at a sleeping newborn in his hands, or a toddler meeting their sibling for the first time with wide curious eyes. I always leave room for those family moments because those are the ones families come back to years later.
Studio sessions also work beautifully when you want the focus entirely on your baby without the variables of home lighting, space, or background. Everything is curated, every detail is intentional, and you walk away with a gallery that feels complete.

What Is a Lifestyle Newborn Session?
A lifestyle newborn session happens in your home, in the environment your baby is actually coming home to. Rather than a controlled studio setup, the goal is to document real life as it looks in those first tender days: your baby in the bassinet you picked out, the morning light coming through the nursery window, your family piled together on the bed you have not left in three days because you are exhausted and completely in love.
Lifestyle sessions are less structured and more documentary in feel. I am not directing every moment from behind a lighting setup. I am moving through your space with you, following the natural rhythm of your day, and capturing what is actually unfolding. The result feels intimate and specific to your family in a way a studio session simply cannot replicate, because it is your home, your light, your story.
These sessions tend to include a beautiful mix of images: quiet detail shots of tiny hands and feet, the nursery you spent months putting together, siblings curled up on the bed, and parents in those unguarded moments that are impossible to stage. The gallery from a lifestyle session feels less like a photo shoot and more like a memory.
Lifestyle sessions work especially well for families who love their home environment and want photos that reflect where their baby is actually growing up. They are also a wonderful option if packing up and driving somewhere in week one feels like more than you want to take on, because I come to you and you do not have to go anywhere.

How Do You Choose?
A few questions that usually help families decide:
Do you want images that feel polished and curated, or real and documentary? Studio leans polished. Lifestyle leans real.
Do you have a home with good natural light? Lifestyle sessions depend heavily on window light, so a home with bright open spaces photographs better than one that is very dark.
Is traveling with a brand new baby a concern? If the thought of packing up and leaving the house in week one feels like too much, a lifestyle session removes that entirely.
Do you want a variety of setups, wraps, and arrangements, or do you want something that captures the actual texture of your life at home? Both are valid. It just depends on what matters most to you.
The honest truth is that some families do both. A studio session in the first two weeks for those classic newborn portraits, and a lifestyle session a little later to capture how your family has settled in together. There is no rule that says you have to choose.

What I Offer
I photograph both studio and lifestyle newborn sessions here in Louisville, and I love each for completely different reasons. If you are still not sure which direction feels right, I am always happy to talk it through before you book. Every family is different, and the best session is the one that actually feels like you.
