Pregnancy is one of the few seasons in life that deserves to be documented as a whole family. Not just mama. Not just the bump. The partner who cannot stop smiling. The toddler who keeps kissing your belly. The dog that has already claimed the nursery as their own. All of it.
As a maternity photographer in Louisville, KY, one of the things I love most about this work is capturing families right at the edge of everything changing. There is something so specific and irreplaceable about that moment, and Louisville gives us some genuinely stunning places to do it.
Here is a look at the locations I return to again and again for family maternity sessions, and what makes each one work so well for this kind of photography.

Locust Grove
Set on 55 rolling acres in eastern Louisville, Historic Locust Grove is one of those locations that feels special from the moment you arrive. The grounds surrounding the circa 1792 Georgian mansion offer open meadows, mature tree canopy, and just enough architectural detail in the background to give photos a timeless, elevated quality. For maternity sessions, it is hard to beat. Soft light falls beautifully across the open lawns, and there is plenty of room for kids to move around without the session feeling chaotic. Spring and fall are particularly gorgeous here.

Anchorage Trail
Anchorage Trail is a 2.1-mile paved loop tucked into one of Louisville’s most charming small communities. It winds through wooded paths, open grassy fields, and past a serene lake, with wildflowers showing up in the warmer months and golden light filtering through the trees in fall. It is peaceful, accessible, and easy on an expectant mama who does not want to navigate uneven terrain. For families with older kids who need room to run and explore between shots, this trail is a wonderful fit. Early morning and golden hour are the sweet spots here.

Beckley Creek Park
Part of the Parklands of Floyds Fork, Beckley Creek Park spans more than 625 acres in east Louisville and offers more variety in a single location than almost anywhere else in the city. Wide open lawns, creek-side paths, native wildflower meadows, and shaded tree canopy all exist within easy walking distance of each other. I love this location for family maternity sessions because it gives us so much flexibility. We can find something lush and dreamy for mama, then shift to an open field for family portraits, all without moving the car. It works in every season and flatters every style.

Norton Commons
If you want maternity photos that feel warm and lived-in rather than strictly nature-based, Norton Commons is worth considering. Louisville’s only New Urbanist neighborhood was designed around walkability, community, and beauty, with tree-lined streets, charming architecture, and over 150 acres of parks and greenspace woven throughout. Sessions here have a lifestyle quality that feels relaxed and genuine. It is a particularly great choice if you live in the area and want your maternity photos to reflect the actual neighborhood your baby is coming home to.

Whitehall House and Gardens
For families who want something a little more formal and lush, Whitehall House and Gardens is in a category of its own. The nearly ten-acre estate features a formal Florentine garden, a woodland fern garden, a stunning peony collection, and an arboretum of over 200 trees, all surrounding a beautifully preserved 19th century Greek Revival mansion. Maternity sessions here have a soft, romantic quality that looks incredible in print. If you are envisioning something elegant and a little more curated, this is the spot.

Chickapoo Farm
If you want something that feels truly different from a park or garden setting, Chickapoo Farm in nearby Shelbyville is worth the short drive. This working 125-acre flower and cattle farm offers a pick-your-own flower patch, sweeping countryside views, and that wide open Kentucky landscape that photographs beautifully in every season. Sessions here have a relaxed, earthy, editorial quality you simply cannot replicate in a city park. Fields of seasonal blooms, wooden farm structures, and rolling pastures in the background give maternity photos a warmth and texture that feels genuinely one of a kind. If you are drawn to something that feels a little more organic and unexpected, this is it.

Louisville Water Tower
Sitting on the scenic banks of the Ohio River, the Louisville Water Tower is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city, and one of my personal favorites for maternity and family sessions. This National Historic Landmark dates back to 1860 and features stunning Greek Revival architecture, sweeping green lawns, and a backdrop unlike anything else in Louisville. The combination of historic stonework, open riverfront sky, and lush grounds gives photos a timeless, editorial quality that never feels overdone. Sessions here photograph beautifully at golden hour when the light catches the architecture and the Ohio River glows in the background. It is a location that feels both grand and intimate at the same time, and it is one I return to again and again.

What to Expect from a Family Maternity Session
A lot of families wonder whether bringing kids along will make the session harder. The honest answer is that it adds a layer of beautiful unpredictability, and those are often the images people end up loving the most. A toddler pressing their ear to mama’s belly. Siblings holding hands around the bump. A partner resting their forehead against yours.
I always plan a little extra time when kids are involved, and I build the session so that the little ones get their moment early while their patience is still intact. By the time they are done, I still have plenty of time to focus on mama and her partner without anyone melting down.
Most families schedule their maternity session between 28 and 34 weeks, when the bump is full and beautiful but mama is still comfortable enough to move around and enjoy the experience.
